Security Installer Licensing in Australia

Every state and territory in Australia requires security camera installers to hold a valid licence. The rules differ from state to state, but the principle is the same: anyone who installs, maintains, or repairs security equipment for a client must be licensed.

This is worth knowing because it affects who you should hire and what to ask before work starts. An unlicensed installer may void your warranty, leave you exposed if something goes wrong, or create compliance issues for your business.

What to Check Before Hiring an Installer

Licensing. Ask the installer for their licence number and check it against the relevant state register. This is the single most important step. If they hesitate or deflect, move on.

Insurance. A licensed installer should carry public liability insurance at a minimum. For commercial jobs, ask whether they also hold professional indemnity cover. If an installer damages your property or a system fails, insurance is what protects you.

Supply and install vs install only. Some installers supply the cameras and equipment as part of the job. Others will install gear you have already purchased. Both models work, but make sure you know which one you are getting before you agree on a price. Supply-and-install jobs usually come with a single warranty covering everything. Install-only jobs may split the warranty between the equipment manufacturer and the installer.
