Re-key all locks when moving in

You can never be too sure who has a copy of a key to your house, particularly if somebody lived there before you did.

It is a good idea to re-key the locks rather than change them altogether. This involves making some minor adjustments for a new set of keys. This is cheaper than buying a new set of locks, as you only pay for the labour.

Install security cameras

Nowadays, security cameras are both reliable and highly affordable.

If you live alone, you want a high-quality set of security cameras set up around your home. Statistics show that 88% of burglars will not target a home fitted with a surveillance system.

You can purchase security cameras for the inside and outside of your home. Modern cameras can send footage directly to your phone or tablet. Some models even send a notification if they notice something suspicious. This means you can check on your property, even if you are in another location.

Get a video doorbell

A video doorbell is a handy device that allows you to talk to whoever is at your door without ever needing to compromise your safety. You can speak to them on your smartphone, meaning you do not even need to be home to see who is at your door.

Many criminals will check to see if anybody is home before they attempt to break-in. A video doorbell will act as a deterrent.

Keep your doors, windows, and garage locked

We would always recommend that you keep your doors locked – even when you are home alone.

You may want to keep a checklist to ensure you lock your doors and windows before leaving the house. This includes the door leading from your garage into your house. Garage doors can be hacked, forced, or overridden by criminals who know what they are doing.

Get to know your neighbours

We recommend introducing yourself to your neighbours, especially if you are a single woman. If you build a good relationship with the people who live in your neighbourhood, you will always have somebody to watch your house when you are not at home.

If you go away on vacation, you should leave a set of keys with a trusted neighbour. They will be able to ensure everything is in order regularly.

It is also a good idea to leave your phone number with your neighbours. If there is an emergency, they will be able to contact you. Obviously, you should wait until you know your neighbours well enough before giving them your personal information.

Be careful on social media

Most women have a social media account. Be careful what you put on your profile, and never share if you are home or not. Also, try to keep any distinguishable features from your neighbourhood out of any photos.

These are just several ways to keep your home safe if you are a woman who lives by herself. Our list may not be all-encompassing, but these tips should give you peace of mind whenever you are home alone or leaving the house unattended.
