Dahua vs Swann: How the Two Brands Compare

Both brands have motion detection, but they use fundamentally different technology.

Dahua: AI-Based Smart Motion Detection (SMD / WizSense)

Dahua cameras with Smart Motion Detection (SMD) use AI algorithms to analyse what is actually in the frame, distinguishing humans and vehicles from animals, plants, and other movement. This is the core technology behind the WizSense product line.

It is more sophisticated than PIR and handles the partial-detection problem much better. A Dahua camera will analyse movement in the frame, even from a partially visible person, and run it through its detection model to determine whether it is human. Dahua's SMD targets under 2% false positive rates according to product documentation.

Dahua's detection also supports more advanced trigger types: tripwire (alert when someone crosses a defined line), intrusion detection (alert when someone enters a defined zone), and directional filtering (alert only when movement goes in a specific direction).

Swann: PIR Heat Detection (TrueDetect)

Swann uses Passive Infrared (PIR) heat detection, which it calls TrueDetect. This works the same way as alarm motion detectors that have been available since the 1980s. When heat energy of a certain size moves past the sensor, such as a person's body heat, it triggers.

The advantage is that a swaying tree branch generates no heat and will not trigger the sensor, which reduces false alarms.

The limitations are real though. At the optimal mounting height and angle, PIR detection typically works up to around 10 metres. And if the camera can only see part of a person (a head above a car bonnet, for example), there may not be enough heat energy for the sensor to register a detection.

Entry-level Swann IP cameras offer basic motion zone settings: a grid where you can mark which areas to watch. More expensive models add line crossing detection.

Swann and Dahua take different approaches to recording colour footage at night.

Dahua: Starlight Technology

Most Dahua cameras in the mid and upper range use Starlight technology, a higher-quality camera sensor that is capable of producing colour footage in low ambient light without a spotlight. The camera does not need to wait for a light to turn on.

Starlight colour night vision requires some ambient light to work. Street lighting, a porch light, or moonlight is usually enough. In total darkness with no ambient light at all, the camera switches to black-and-white infrared, which does not require any ambient light.

Dahua does also make cameras with active deterrence (spotlights and sirens) under the TiOC branding, at an additional cost on top of an already higher base hardware price.

Swann

Most Swann cameras use a spotlight to produce colour night vision. When the camera's motion sensor detects activity, the spotlight activates and illuminates the scene for colour recording.

The trade-off: there is a brief moment between motion detection and spotlight activation where the camera adjusts to the new light level. In some cases, this adjustment period causes the camera to miss the critical early frames of an event.

Key difference: Dahua's Starlight approach records colour continuously in low light without a trigger delay. Swann's spotlight creates its own light but introduces a brief adjustment period at the point of detection.

On paper, many Swann kits appear to offer more features than a comparable Dahua kit at a similar price. Two-way audio, spotlights, and sirens are bundled into consumer-priced Swann kits. An equivalent Dahua kit at the same price point may have none of these.

This reflects a deliberate design choice, not an oversight. Consumer-grade manufacturers work from a price point and ask what can be included at that price. Prosumer manufacturers start from a hardware quality standard and price accordingly.

To include spotlights, sirens, and two-way audio in a camera at a consumer price point, something has to give. That trade-off is almost always the camera sensor, the component that determines how well the camera sees, particularly in low light. The result is a camera that does many things adequately but excels at none of them.

The sensor, lens, and housing in Dahua's base hardware are prioritised over bundled features. The image quality and detection capability reflect that. If active deterrence features are important, Dahua TiOC cameras include spotlights and sirens, but they cost more because the underlying hardware quality is not compromised to meet a consumer price point.

Think of it this way: at a comparable price, Swann includes an average sensor with extra features, while Dahua has a better sensor with fewer extras. If you want both a high-quality sensor and active deterrence features, Dahua TiOC cameras deliver that at a higher price.

Dahua's camera housings are metal on the standard outdoor range. Metal housings handle heat, cold, and physical contact better than plastic over time, and they are significantly more resistant to tampering.

Swann's consumer cameras are plastic-housed. IP66 weather ratings are available on outdoor models, and they hold up adequately for standard home installation, but the build quality difference between a plastic consumer camera and a metal prosumer camera is noticeable in practice.

Swann cameras are available at JB Hi-Fi, Bunnings, The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, and online. Kits are typically self-contained and designed to be purchased and installed without additional components.

Dahua is primarily sold through security wholesalers and licensed installers. It is not stocked in major consumer electronics retailers. Pricing varies depending on the model, kit configuration, and whether hard drive storage is included. A surveillance-grade hard drive is typically an additional component cost on Dahua NVR kits.

At a broad level, a 4-camera 4K Dahua NVR kit with hard drive and a comparable Swann 4K kit often land in a similar price range. The difference is what you get for that price: Swann bundles more consumer features into cheaper hardware; Dahua puts the budget into better core hardware.

For anything beyond basic home use, including multiple cameras, outdoor commercial premises, and properties with significant coverage requirements, the difference in hardware quality becomes more relevant over time.
